Vintage Tea Set by Fujii Sanyū – Teapot & Six Cups
A complete vintage Hagi ware tea set by Fujii Sanyū (藤井左入), comprising one lidded side-handled teapot and six small teacups.
Fine lines visible within the glaze are known as kannyū, a characteristic form of glaze crazing associated with Hagi ware. These lines are not considered damage. As the vessels are used, traces of tea can gradually settle into the crazing, subtly deepening the colour and appearance of the pottery over time.
This gradual transformation is traditionally known as Hagi no nanabake, or the “seven transformations of Hagi,” and is one of the qualities for which Hagi ware is especially treasured.
The set is accompanied by two original Japanese pamphlets from the kiln, including information about the maker, the history of Hagi ware, and its naturally porous character.
Set includes:
- One lidded side-handled teapot
- Six small teacups
- Two original Japanese pamphlets
- Original box

Use and care
Hagi ware is traditionally made from softly fired, naturally porous clay. As explained in the original kiln pamphlet, slight seepage may occasionally occur during early use and may gradually lessen as the vessel develops with time.
We recommend using the teapot and cups on a tray or coaster, particularly during their first uses. Hand wash gently and allow each piece to dry completely before storing. The unglazed foot may be slightly rough, so avoid dragging the pieces across delicate surfaces.
Please note that this is a vintage, handmade item and may display age-related wear, handmade irregularities, firing marks, glaze variation, crazing and other imperfections consistent with its age and method of production. Colours may appear differently depending on lighting, photography, editing, screen settings and display calibration. Measurements are taken by hand and may vary slightly. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.
